Music is a language that doesn’t speak in particular words. It speaks in emotions, and if it’s in the bones, it’s in the bones.
— Keith Richards

Major K Music is set apart from many other local and regional in-home, in-studio and online music schools in that we leverage both the the Kodaly and Suzuki pedagogical teaching methods into a hybrid system designed with three main tenets in mind — Learn, Play and Perform.

Major K Music students learn the theory and musicianship of their chosen instrument; the intended method of playing that instrument to suit every student’s desired genre and style; and to upgrade their stage and performance skills to showcase their talents. Rest assured, with Major K Music, you or your child will be well on their way to realizing their dreams of shredding the guitar, twinkling the ivories, or singing their heart out!

Major K Music will also offer Instruction and Curriculum for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools Practical and Performance Grade Music Exams in Piano, Jazz Piano, Voice, Guitar Musical Theatre and Music Theory and the Music Teacher’s Association of California Certificate of Merit in Voice beginning in 2023.

Guitar

For children and beginners, we use the Mel Bay publication Children's Guitar Series Books as well as Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series. I also apply basic music theory that includes learning the Circle of Fifths and basic reading of sheet music.

For intermediate guitar players, we utilize the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series in addition to songbooks and tabs of the students’ choosing. to teach Power Chord Formation and Delivery, Fingerpicking, Pentatonic Scales, Reading Tabulature, and tackling some of classic rock and jazz's favorite tunes.

For guitar lessons at my studio, we leverage Guitar Pro to project and display tabs and play-alongs with ease. For in-home lessons, we use the software on iPads for select lessons as we begin song selection and play-alongs.

For students participating in the ABRSM curriculum, we utilize the ABRSM Guitar Exam Pieces and Guitar Star repertoire to prepare for the Practical Grade Examinations.

We cannot wait to rock out with you as you find your inner rockstar!

Piano

For children, we use the Faber Piano Adventures lesson books that includes lessons and homework in a fun and engaging way to promote retention.

For beginners, we use the Faber Adult Course books in addition to A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony to learn chord progressions, sequences, modulations, realization of both figured and un-figured basses, basic improvisation, and score reading. Learning these techniques will help transition students seamlessly to various styles and genres that incorporate the piano, helping you learn and love the piano without frustrating stoppages that often lead us away from lesson continuity.

From there, we utilize the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library series to promote chord inversion, syncopation, arpeggiation, pedaling, and key centering in addition to songbooks and songs of the students’ choosing.

For students participating in the ABRSM curriculum, we utilize the ABRSM Piano Exam Pieces repertoire to prepare for the Practical Grade Examinations.

Vocals

We utilize the Kodaly method for vocal performance, starting at the basic level of tonal scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic, etc.) and Solfege application to serve as a foundational base; rhythm syllables such as "ta" and "doo".

Additionally, foundational breath control is applied, as it is very important for the singer to learn how to control their breath and support their sound. From there, repertoire mimicry is applied, or what we call "phrase building," as it is important for any singer to be able to effectively create vocal phrases.

For Broadway Singing, we specialize in CCM, or Contemporary Commercial Music, taking techniques from this school of thought to furnish our methods of blending classical techniques with rock 'n roll and broadway vocal production. Marrying concepts and techniques from both allows our students to understand how to apply breathing, opening, and open-tone projection on the stage and discover their true Broadway voice.

For students participating in the ABRSM curriculum, we utilize the ABRSM Vocal Exam Pieces and repertoire to prepare for the Practical or Performance Grade Examinations.

Music Production

I've been teaching Music Recording and Production for over six years. For beginners, I utilize the software each student resonates with; this includes Audacity, Ableton Live, GarageBand, Logic Pro X, StudioOne, and FL Studio for PC/Mac. These programs allow us to teach the basic underpinnings of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). We learn how to record, play with a software instrument, mix, cut, splice, copy, paste, sample and use basic effects for recordings and productions.

For intermediate music recording and production students, I utilize the aforementioned DAWs to learn how to utilize MIDI instruments; edit and arrangement techniques, user-created key commands; automation; mixing; and creating a final mix for mastering.

For all students, we also learn how to use microphones for vocal and instrument recording. We'll learn sound damping, portable vocal booth utilization, and acoustics.

I'd love to help you begin your journey on music and audio engineering!
